Key Takeaways

  • Best pick for red clay on carpet: The Uwant Carpet Cleaner has steam plus hot or cold water modes, and its markdown is one of the few this week that looks honest.
  • Top-ranked steamer for muddy grout: The Waitbird Multi-Purpose Steam Cleaner is ranked number one in its category, and more than half of the deal stock was gone when I checked.
  • Be careful with the list prices: The Morrrer spot cleaner and the Aspiron canister vacuum both show 79% off, measured against original prices I don’t believe.
  • Use the right method first: Let red clay dry, vacuum it, then blot what’s left. The FAOGO car vacuum is the handheld I’d pick for dried clay in a truck cab.

In October the ground in West Virginia never really dries out. Bow season is open and the back roads stay slick after every front that comes over the ridge. By now the mudroom rug has turned from tan to a color I’d call rust.

Red clay is the worst of it, because it doesn’t come up like ordinary dirt. It grabs onto carpet fibers and leaves an orange shadow that comes back every time you think you got it. Most of us make it worse by going after it with a wet rag while it’s still fresh.

While I went through this week’s home & decor deals for WV Finds, the same thing kept coming up. Portable carpet cleaners and steam cleaners were everywhere, and Prime Big Deal Days had pushed a lot of them down at once. The Uwant and Morrrer carpet cleaners both rank high in their category, and Waitbird’s steam cleaner sits at number one.

So this post is half how-to and half shopping list, in the same order as the job itself: dry, vacuum, then treat the stain. Some of the list prices look padded, and I’ll get to that at the end. Prices verified October 8, 2026.

What’s the best way to get red clay mud out of carpet?

Let the mud dry completely, break it up and vacuum it, then flush the leftover stain with a spot cleaner and cool water. Scrubbing wet clay drives it deeper into the pile, so blot and extract instead.

A portable spot cleaner does the extraction step better than a towel ever will. If the dog tracks mud in too, our rundown of carpet spot cleaners that lift pet stains covers more machines in this class.

Morrrer Portable Carpet Cleaner

The Morrrer is a portable spot cleaner with 15Kpa suction, and it ships with cleaning solution, so you can start on the mudroom rug the day it arrives. The self-cleaning system matters more than it sounds, because clay water left in the hose dries into grit. It ranks around 31 in its category, but I don’t trust the original list price, so judge it on the current number alone.

  • 15Kpa suction
  • Cleaning solution included
  • Self-cleaning system

Uwant Carpet Cleaner Machine

If a neighbor asked me which machine to buy for red clay, I’d point to the Uwant. It has steam and hot or cold water modes with 18Kpa suction, so you can start a fresh stain cool and move up to heat on an old one after a test spot. It ranks 13 in its category and includes a Pet Pro cleaner, and its markdown is smaller and easier to believe than most of what I saw this week.

  • Steam, hot and cold water modes
  • 18Kpa suction
  • Pet Pro cleaner included

Can a steam cleaner get red clay stains out?

Steam cleaners do their best clay work on hard surfaces, where red clay stains grout and settles into textured tile by the back door. On carpet, steam can loosen a stain, but it can’t pull the water back out. Follow it with a spot cleaner or a vacuum.

Ealloo Handheld Steam Cleaner

The Ealloo is the smallest steamer here, a pressurized handheld that comes with 14 accessories for spots like stair edges and car floor mats. It has a safety lock, which I like on a pressurized tool in a house with kids. It ranks 16 in its category, and it’s sized for spot work, not whole floors.

  • Pressurized handheld steamer
  • 14 accessories
  • Safety lock

Waitbird Multi-Purpose Steam Cleaner

The Waitbird multi-purpose steam cleaner runs at 4.5 bar and 300°F and is built for tile and grout. It’s ranked number one in its category, and more than half of the deal stock was already claimed when I checked. If red clay has turned your mudroom grout lines orange, look at this one first.

  • 4.5 bar pressure
  • 300°F steam
  • Built for tile and grout

Waitbird Floor and Grout Steam Cleaner

This second Waitbird has the same 4.5 bar and 300°F specs and is aimed at bathroom and kitchen floors. On paper the two models are very close, so click through and compare the accessories on each card before you choose. It ranks number four, so the brand has two strong sellers at once.

  • 4.5 bar pressure
  • 300°F steam
  • Bathroom and kitchen floors

Which vacuum pulls dried red dirt out of a rug?

A vacuum with strong suction does the step most people skip, which is pulling dried clay grit out before any water touches the rug. If you add water first, you’re just making mud again.

For a house with hardwood and area rugs both, my notes on choosing a vacuum for a cabin with mixed floors go into more detail. If the mud came in with standing water, start with one of the wet dry vacs built for a flooded basement and let the carpet dry before you treat any stains.

Aspiron Canister Vacuum

The Aspiron is a 1600W bagless canister vacuum. That style usually handles stairs and area rugs better than an upright. Fine clay dust puffs up when you empty a bagless bin, so empty it outside, and keep in mind that the original price on this one looks inflated to me.

  • 1600W motor
  • Bagless canister design

Zulyxio Cordless Stick Vacuum

The Zulyxio is a cordless stick vacuum rated at 580W and 50Kpa, with up to 65 minutes of runtime. It stands up on its own and has an anti-tangle brush, which helps when dog hair is mixed in with the dirt. At rank 98 it has a shorter sales record than the others here, but the specs are strong for a cordless stick.

  • 580W, 50Kpa suction
  • Up to 65 minutes runtime
  • Anti-tangle, self-standing

How do you clean red clay out of a truck or a couch?

For a truck or a couch, use a handheld vacuum on dried clay before you reach for anything wet. The clay rarely stays on the floor, and it ends up on truck mats after a muddy tailgate and on couch cushions after somebody sits down in work pants.

For the vehicle side of this, our guide to handheld vacuums for dirt and dog hair in a truck covers more options.

YOOHI Handheld Vacuum

The YOOHI is a small cordless handheld with 6000Pa of suction, an LED light and a 500ML cup. It charges over USB and runs 20 to 25 minutes, which is enough for a truck cab. That suction is light, so use it to grab loose dirt, not to deep clean packed clay.

  • 6000Pa suction
  • 20 to 25 minutes runtime
  • 500ML cup, USB charging

FAOGO Car Vacuum

The FAOGO car vacuum claims 35000Pa from a brushless motor, which is far more than the YOOHI. It’s a 6-in-1 tool with an air duster for blowing grit out of seat seams and vents. It ranks number one in its category, and of the two handhelds it’s the one I’d choose for dried clay.

  • 35000Pa brushless motor
  • 6-in-1 design
  • Air duster function

XenonLab Mattress Vacuum

The XenonLab is a corded mattress and upholstery vacuum with 18000Pa of suction and a high-speed tapping head. The tapping is the part that matters on a couch, because it shakes dried dust out of the fabric before the suction pulls it away. The 275nm UV-C light and 140°F ultrasonic heat are meant for beds, not mud, so buy it for cushions, not wet stains.

  • 18000Pa suction
  • 275nm UV-C light
  • 140°F ultrasonic heat with high-speed tapping

Frequently asked questions

Should you clean red clay mud while it’s still wet?

No. Wet clay smears and soaks deeper into carpet fibers. Let it dry completely, break it up, and vacuum out the loose dirt before you add any water.

How do you get a red clay stain out of carpet after vacuuming?

Blot the spot with cool water and a little dish soap, or run a carpet spot cleaner over it. Work from the outside of the stain inward and blot instead of scrubbing. Older stains can take several passes, so test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Is a steam cleaner or a spot cleaner better for red clay?

On carpet, a spot cleaner is better because it pulls the dirty water back out. A steam cleaner is the better choice for tile and grout. The Uwant in this list has steam and water modes both, so it can do some of each.

Can you use hot water on red clay stains?

Start with cool or lukewarm water on a fresh stain, then move to heat only if the stain doesn’t come out. Test a hidden spot first, and keep high heat away from wool rugs.

Discounts this week ran from about a quarter off on the Uwant up to 79% off on the Morrrer and Aspiron. I don’t trust those top numbers. When the list price on a brand I don’t know is several times the sale price, I go by the current price and the bestseller rank instead.

The steam cleaners looked more believable, with the Waitbird multi-purpose at half off and the Ealloo at a bit under 40%. Overall it was a decent week, not a great one. The Uwant is my standout for carpet, the Waitbird is the one I’d buy for a tiled mudroom, and I’d pass on the YOOHI for clay because its suction is too light for packed grit.

Prime Big Deal Days pricing won’t last long, so if a spot cleaner is already on your list, this is a good week to buy it. Mud season has a long way to go, with buck season opening the week of Thanksgiving and plenty of wet weekends before then. If none of these fit, browse all deals, and put a coarse mat outside the door, since the stain that’s easiest to clean is the one that never reaches the carpet.
