Key Takeaways
- The wild game anchor: The MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook sits at bestseller rank #3 in this whole pool and is more than half off, which is the deepest cut I’ve tracked on it.
- Best value in the group: Best of the Best from the Mid-South pulls recipes from West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee community cookbooks for the price of a sandwich.
- Trusted publisher pick: DK’s The Modern Pioneer Cookbook covers traditional foods technique, which is the part most game cooks are missing.
- Feeding a full camp: Fix-It and Forget-It Pink Cookbook has over 700 slow cooker recipes, and a crock pot running all day is how camp dinner gets done.
Bow season opens in West Virginia before most people have put the window fans away, and if your camp is like every camp I know, the food plan is somebody’s word that they’ll “bring stuff.” Then it’s day two, there’s a doe hanging, and dinner is whatever fits in one pan on a propane burner. Late August is the window to fix that, while the freezer is still mostly empty and you have time to read something.
What jumped out reviewing this week’s book deals for WV Finds is how much cookbook inventory is marked down right now, and how little of it is written for anyone cooking a wild animal. Out of thirty titles that came through, exactly one was a true game cookbook, and it happened to be the highest ranked item in the batch. The MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook is at #3 in this pool, which tells you people are already shopping for venison technique in August.
So I built this list around the camp kitchen rather than around a genre. Game and fish first, then the slow cooker and pressure cooker books that make feeding six hungry people workable, then Southern comfort food for the nights the hunting was bad and the eating needs to be good. Prices verified August 29, 2026.
Which cookbook belongs in the hunting camp kitchen?
If you only buy one, buy the MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook. It is the only title here written specifically for hunters and anglers, and it covers butchering and cooking technique instead of just recipes.
MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook

The MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook: Recipes and Techniques for Every Hunter and Angler
This is the anchor of the whole list. Steven Rinella’s book runs through recipes and techniques for every hunter and angler, meaning it deals with the parts most cookbooks skip: what to do with tough cuts, how to handle fish you caught yourself, how to keep venison from tasting like liver. Random House is a trusted publisher and this copy is sold by Amazon with Prime, currently down more than half from list. At rank #3 in this batch, it is moving fast enough that I would not sit on it long.
- Recipes and techniques for hunters and anglers
- Covers butchering and handling
- Trusted publisher, sold by Amazon
DK The Modern Pioneer Cookbook
DK’s Modern Pioneer Cookbook comes at food from the traditional foods side: fermenting, curing, cooking from scratch with what you actually have. That skill set overlaps hard with game cooking, because both start with an ingredient nobody handed you in a plastic tray. It pairs well with the MeatEater book, which handles the animal, while this one handles everything you serve alongside it. If your reading tastes run this direction, the homesteading books we rounded up for beginners cover a lot of the same ground.
- Traditional foods kitchen recipes
- Fermenting and from-scratch technique
- DK hardcover, bestseller rank #124
Best of the Best from the Mid-South
Best of the Best from the Mid-South pulls selected recipes from favorite community cookbooks of West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. That is church supper and fire hall food, which is exactly what a camp kitchen runs on. It is the cheapest book on this list by a wide margin and the one I would hand to somebody who says they don’t cook. Our full West Virginia cookbook roundup has more in this vein if regional recipes are your thing.
- Recipes from WV, KY and TN cookbooks
- Regional community recipe collection
- Lowest priced title in this roundup
What works for slow cooker and one-pot camp dinners?
Slow cookers and pressure cookers are the two appliances that make sense at camp, because both let you leave food alone while you’re out. Tough game cuts also respond better to long, low heat than to a hot pan.
Fix-It and Forget-It Pink Cookbook

Fix-It and Forget-It Pink Cookbook – Avon Ed.: More Than 700 Great Slow-Cooker Recipes!
More than 700 slow cooker recipes in one volume, which is the practical answer to feeding a camp. The Fix-It and Forget-It series is not fancy and does not pretend to be, and that’s why it works here: dump, set, walk out the door at dawn. Swap the beef in most of these recipes for shoulder or neck meat and you’re in business. This Avon edition is a fundraiser tie-in, so the pink cover is doing double duty.
- More than 700 slow cooker recipes
- Avon fundraiser edition
- Simple dump-and-go format
The Essential Instant Pot Cookbook

The Essential Instant Pot Cookbook: Fresh and Foolproof Recipes for Your Electric Pressure Cooker
The Essential Instant Pot Cookbook is the cheapest entry point on this list for pressure cooking, and pressure is what turns a stubborn venison roast into something you can cut with a fork in about an hour. Recipes are written for electric pressure cookers generally, not just one model. It sits at rank #2,152 here, lower than the big names, but the price is the argument. We went deeper on this category in the Instant Pot cookbook roundup.
- Recipes for electric pressure cookers
- Cheapest pressure cooking entry here
- Ten Speed Press paperback
Sous Vide at Home
![Sous Vide at Home: The Modern Technique for Perfectly Cooked Meals [A Cookbook]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/514TB5chbmL._SL160_.jpg)
Sous Vide at Home: The Modern Technique for Perfectly Cooked Meals [A Cookbook]
Sous Vide at Home is the outlier pick, and I’ll be honest that it is a home kitchen book, not a camp book. But lean game meat is unforgiving on a grill and very forgiving in a water bath, so backstrap is one of the best arguments for the method. If you already own an immersion circulator, this is a solid reference from Ten Speed Press. If you don’t, start with the beginner sous vide titles before spending here.
- Modern water bath technique
- Good match for lean game cuts
- Requires an immersion circulator
Southern and comfort food for the camp table
Camp cooking is Southern cooking most nights: biscuits, gravy, beans, something fried. These three cover the meals that go around the game, and they’re all deeply discounted.
Southern Living Annual Recipes 20th Anniversary
The Southern Living Annual Recipes 20th Anniversary Edition is a doorstop of a reference, and that’s the point. Annual Recipes volumes collect a full year of magazine recipes, so you get breadth rather than a single cook’s point of view. At rank #435 with Prime shipping, it’s a reasonable pick for the person who wants one big book on the shelf instead of six small ones.
- Full year of magazine recipes
- Large-format reference volume
- Bestseller rank #435
Danni's Juke Joint Comfort Food Cookbook
Danni’s Juke Joint Comfort Food Cookbook is bold Southern comfort food, modern versions of old school flavors. It’s the most personality of anything in this group, and it’s the one I’d cook from on a Saturday when the hunting is done and there’s time to make a real meal. Rank #201 with Prime. If soul food is the corner of the shelf you’re building out, the vegan soul food list approaches it from a different angle.
- Bold Southern comfort food recipes
- Modern takes on old school flavors
- Bestseller rank #201
The Pioneer Woman Cooks Super Easy
Ree Drummond’s Super Easy is 120 shortcut recipes built for weeknight dinners, and shortcut is the operative word at camp. Nothing here requires an ingredient you’d have to drive to Morgantown for. It’s a number one New York Times bestseller sitting at rank #7 in this pool, sold by Amazon, and the discount is over half off list.
- 120 shortcut dinner and dessert recipes
- New York Times number one bestseller
- Sold by Amazon with Prime
Is an air fryer cookbook worth the shelf space?
Only if you already own the appliance. But an air fryer handles small batches of fish and cutlets well, which is the case for including one book here.
The Skinnytaste Air Fryer Cookbook

The Skinnytaste Air Fryer Cookbook: The 75 Best Healthy Recipes for Your Air Fryer
The Skinnytaste Air Fryer Cookbook is 75 recipes, which is a modest count, but they’re tested and the portion guidance is clear. Crappie fillets and venison cutlets do fine in an air fryer without a quart of oil, and that’s a real advantage in a small camp kitchen. It’s the lowest priced book in this group after the Mid-South collection. Skip it if you don’t have the appliance, because there’s no workaround in these pages.
- 75 tested air fryer recipes
- Good for small batch fish and cutlets
- Clear portion guidance
Frequently asked questions
What is the best cookbook for cooking venison and wild game?
The MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook is the clear choice in this group. It covers technique for handling and cooking game and fish, not just recipes, which matters more when you’re starting with an animal instead of a store package. It’s also the highest ranked title in this week’s book pool.
Do I need a game-specific cookbook, or will a regular one work?
A general cookbook works fine for everything served alongside the meat. Wild game itself is leaner and tougher than farmed meat, so cook times and moisture handling differ enough that one dedicated reference saves a lot of ruined roasts. Pair a game book with a slow cooker or Southern title and you’ve covered most camp meals.
Are these hardcover or paperback?
Formats vary by title, and the deal card shows the edition that’s discounted. Bound hardcovers hold up better in a camp kitchen where books get splashed and stacked. Check the listing before buying if format matters to you.
How often do cookbook prices change?
Book prices move constantly, sometimes several times a week. The discounts here run from about 50 to 62 percent off list, verified August 29, 2026, and titles at that depth usually bounce back within a couple of weeks. We recheck prices when the post updates.
Which of these is the best value?
Best of the Best from the Mid-South, at a little over seven dollars, gets you recipes drawn from West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee community cookbooks. For pure dollars-to-usefulness in a camp kitchen, nothing else here comes close.
Discounts across this batch ran between roughly 50 and 62 percent off list, which is a normal-to-good week for books rather than a great one. The tighter cluster is the tell: almost everything landed between fourteen and seventeen dollars regardless of what the list price said, which is where publishers park backlist hardcovers when they want them moving. Two titles broke out of that band on the low end, the Mid-South collection at seven dollars and the Essential Instant Pot book at nine.
The standout is the MeatEater book, and it isn’t close. It’s the only title written for the actual use case, it’s sold by Amazon under a trusted publisher, and a discount that deep on a book still ranking at #3 is not something I see often. Second pick is the Mid-South collection on price alone. The one I’d think hardest about is Sous Vide at Home, which is a fine book but assumes equipment most camps don’t have.
Book markdowns usually thin out through September and then pick back up as the holiday gift push starts in late October, so if a title on this list is one you’ve been circling, this is a better week than next month will be. Ten Speed Press and Clarkson Potter both ran deep across multiple titles this week, which often means a backlist clearance that continues another week or two. You can browse all deals if you want to see what else turned up, and the wood stove season cookbook list is where I’d go next once the weather turns.
